Cheat to Eat: Easy Bulgogi Recipe You Can Make

Bulgogi is a staple of Korean cuisine. Above is a plate of bulgogi with rice, kimchi and seaweed.

If you like Korean food, you probably like bulgogi. For many people, it is the first Korean dish that they have tried. What is bulgogi? Simply put, it is marinated steak meat that is often paired with rice, kimchi and other pickled sides. The taste of bulgogi can differ depending on the marinade that is used.

While this dish is tasty, the price of it has gone up in many areas. At one restaurant that I visited, a bulgogi dinner cost $30 USD for a half pound of this marinated beef. At this price, you could understand why some do not eat this meal very often. While some would gladly pay this amount so that they don’t have to thinly cut and marinate the steak themselves, did you know you can easily make this dish at home, and sometimes get the meat for less than $10 USD per pound? All without having to cut up the steak yourself into different pieces?

Cheat To Eat

This is where you can #cheattoeat and make this dish yourself whenever you want to. So what kind of steak meat can you buy precut for bulgogi? And where can you buy it from?

The meat you’ll look for is shaved steak. While some use this meat for tacos or cheese steaks, you can use this for bulgogi as well. While the meat will look thin, it will be beefy enough for bulgogi. The best way to make sure your bulgogi isn’t clumpy is to separate the pieces before putting them into a bowl or bag for marinating.

Once this is done, add your marinade to the meat and make sure that it is coating all of the meat you are planning to cook. Let the marinade sit for a couple of hours before cooking over medium high to high heat until the meat is properly cooked. Once it is cooked, let the meat rest for a few minutes before serving. If you want to pair this with alcohol, Korean soju will be your drink of choice. For a classic taste, plain soju will work. But you can also try fruit flavored soju if you want a sweeter tasting alcohol. To find soju, look for a Korean liquor store or for an H Mart in your area.

But you may be asking, what marinade should I use to create this classic Korean dish at home? To find out what marinades I recommend, please stay tuned as I teach you how you can cheat to eat and have delicious meals right at home.
